Richardson College for the Environment
- Number 10 Architectural Group
As part of the University of Winnipeg’s downtown campus, Richardson College for the Environment and Science Complex is home to students and their aspiring ideas. With that in mind SMS Engineering decided to bring our own aspiring ideas too.
The four-storey building, with basement, is home to chemistry and biology research laboratories, that are interconnected by an atrium featuring exhaust and pressurization systems. To reduce reliance on fossil fuels for heat, the building uses an electric boiler and four gas fired boilers. Three large air-handling units distribute air around the building and the labs return air is exhausted through heat wheels and strobic fans.
The electrical deign uses energy efficient lighting technology, including day light harvesting and occupancy control. SMS Engineering also provided systems design for fire alarm, fibre optic and copper IT cabling and provisions for building security.
Richardson College for the Environment and Science Complex was the recipient of the 2013 ACEC Award of Merit. This significant project was delivered using the Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) method and the building was designed to be energy efficient, and is certified LEED Gold.
