All summer long, residents of Winnipeg and visitors have been keeping a close eye on the RBC Convention Centre construction that is changing the landscape of downtown Winnipeg.
During the $180 million redevelopment and expansion project the facility has nearly doubled in size and extended south over York Avenue onto what was previously a surface parking lot.
The new facility includes multi‑purpose divisible spaces, additional underground parking, a main floor ballroom and public assembly spaces. The third floor features new exhibit space that connects to the existing building and creates over 131,000 sq. ft. of contiguous, wide open trade and consumer show space.
Capping off the summer construction season was the recent installation of a unique honeycomb ceiling in the City Room located in the heart of the third floor exhibition floor space.
"The lighting system has multiple controls including dimming, colour changing, zoning and scheduled event programming. Being able to tie all of these systems together was very rewarding." - SMS Engineering Lighting Designer Bryan Smith
Custom made hexagon-shaped light fixtures illuminate the honeycomb shape, giving off a crystal-like effect. The stunning results can be viewed from York Avenue via the floor-to-ceiling curtain wall. The brightness of these lights can be controlled within multiple zones opening up many possibilities to be creative when setting the mood at your next event.
