Pembina Hall Student Residences
University of Manitoba, Winnipeg
With an extra 360 students scheduled to arrive at the Pembina Hall Dining Facility on the University of Manitoba Fort Garry Campus and no room on-site for a traditional addition, there was only one way to go: up.
It’s not often that a building gets placed on top of another, but SMS Engineering was up to the task. Bridging the Pembina Hall facility, the now 15 storey structure is fully glazed on its north and south face. The varying solar load on the building was a challenge solved with distributed heat pumps which are used to cool the sunny face while heating the shaded side. The hook-up to the campus heat recovery infrastructure also allows for minimal energy input into the building on an annual basis which makes for great savings.
